During the last 20 -30 years a significant amount of development has gone into ways of separating operators from the various pharmaceutical process operations in the quest to reduce the risk of contamination to the finished product. It is recognised that the greatest risk to the product is presented by Human operators to the extent that people are considered the "dirtiest" part of aseptic processing. This is the reason Barrier technology has been long established in the world of Pharmaceutical production. A variety of alternate barriers are available to separate operators from the product with the main aim of reducing/preventing material contamination. The very fact that a barrier is created in order to achieve this goal however presents its own challenges. The operator has the issue of less flexibility and manoeuvrability to carry out the necessary process operations. The Isolator whilst providing the highest level of product containment also presents the highest level of operator restrictions. Restricted-access barrier systems (RABS) which are able to provide a level of aseptic quality near that of isolators, are becoming recognised as the ideal solution in some applications as an alternative to the more traditional ‘Isolator'.
