During the initial stages of the development of a new substance with biological activity which is obtained by means of biotechnological processes, and during the optimisation of an existing process, numerous steps have to be accomplished before moving on to large-scale culture production. These steps include, among others: genetic engineering to express the desired compound, selection of the cell line and the clone, definition and optimisation of the culture medium, cell characterisation (determination of the cell growth parameters, metabolism, physiology, gene profiles, protein expression, etc.), characterisation of the optimum culture conditions and strategies (initial cell concentration, cell adaptation, pH or pO2 control requirements, etc.) and the consequent evaluation of the biological quality and activity of the developed products.
At the same time, it is also important to carry out such research steps in a model which is most representative of the final production system to be used, and, when the new product is already developed, to be able to determine its therapeutic or toxic effects on the different cell types, the required dose, etc.
A great many biotechnological processes which are presently under development require an automatic system with a large capacity and fast experimentation facility, capable of on-line monitoring not only of the main culture variables such as the temperature, pH or dissolved oxygen, among others, but also of monitoring growth and cell metabolism (cell concentration and activity), always in the shortest time possible in order to accelerate the bioprocess development and facilitate the launch of the new product.
